PVC Saddle Rack

Make a portable saddle rack out of PVC pipes! Measure your largest saddle. Cut pieces of PVC pipe to the lengths needed for each section of the saddle rack. Assemble the rack with PVC connectors and attach a PVC end cap to each foot of the stand. Paint or decorate the saddle rack if desired and cover the paint with a sealant.

    Hi there,
I was unable to download the instructions for this saddle rack. I received a message that I didn’t have the correct security clearance (or something like that) to access the PDF. Would you be able to just email the PDF instructions to me? Thanks.

      Hi Jenaay,
That is so strange! This post doesn’t have any PDF instructions to download – the source link goes to Pinterest. Here is the link: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/198228821068949878/ Let us know if you have any more trouble!

Here’s a plan I used: http://www.saddlestandsforvehicles.com/Assembly.pdf However, I used ‘slip Tee’ connectors on the top, enabling me to have three pieces of equal length (it also allows the top assembly to freely rock). http://www.amazon.com/FORMUFIT-F112STE-WH-4-Fitting-Furniture-Grade/dp/B00MZ2WW8O/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1452356440&sr=8-13&keywords=slip+tee+pvc

I put O Ring bolts on the uprights for attaching bungees with lark knots.

I used a powered miter saw to cut. I got super clean and even cuts. The finished product: http://postimg.org/image/ndbmk8lvh/

I made one for my daughter’s friend on her riding team, and ended up with orders for 5 more.
I’ll happily provide advice on making these.

Wow! Yours looks great! I like the idea about the o-bolts. I was thinking of wrapping bungees around the stand (once I get it built), but the rings are nicer. What size/diameter PVC pipe did you use?

Did you buy all the fittings from Amazon? I was wandering the aisles of Home Depot last night driving the men in the little orange aprons crazy…

        Thanks for your help.

        Hi there,
I guess communicating via the DIY site doesn’t work very well. I really would like your advice on building one of these saddle racks. Specifically, where did you buy the fittings/joins?

        Thanks,
        Jenaay

          Jenaay,
All you need for this project are PVC pipes and various PVC connectors. Those are available at any major hardware store, such as Lowes or Home Depot, as well as online. The “O Ring bolts” that Oz mentions are more commonly called either “eye bolts” or “screw eyes” and are also available at hardware stores. If you print the picture of Oz’s final product and bring it to Home Depot, they will be able to identify the parts. Good luck!

Thanks, but I’ve already done that with no luck (see message of 1/13/16). My HD and Lowes don’t have a very good selection of fittings. They told me to go to a plumbing store, most of which are wholesale to contractors…

What size PVC pipe are you using?

    Thanks.

      Jennay,
Sorry about that – I thought you were having trouble with the bolts and was hoping that by giving you a more common name for them, the hardware store workers might be able to find them easier. You can actually shop for the PVC connectors/fittings/sockets through the Home Depot or Lowes websites. Another option might be to try pool supply stores in your area. You can always order them from Amazon if needed as well.
The parts that you need are:
      2 Tee connectors
      4 90-Degree Elbow connectors
      2 3-way Tee connectors
      2 4-way Tee connectors
      4 end caps
      and of course the pipes.
The exact names of the parts may vary from store to store, but you can see what the parts look like in the picture. Just make sure you are buying all the same size, as you mentioned. The link to Amazon that Oz provided is for a 1.5″ pipe fitting. That size should be fine. A 1″ pipe should be fine as well, but it would be a bit more flexible, which isn’t ideal if your saddle is heavy.
Here is a link to the PVC fittings section on the Lowes website: http://www.lowes.com/Search=pvc+fittings?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&N=0&newSearch=true&Ntt=pvc+fittings#!

I’m unable to find the instructions as well. Whenever I click the link for instructions, only a photo shows up. Anyone have the dimensions to use? Thanks.

      Amyb,
The original source for this project is on Pinterest and does not have any instructions, so we provided general instructions on this page. PVC can seem confusing if you’ve never worked with it, but it’s really just like working with adult-size Tinkertoys or K’Nex. Making this stand is just a matter of cutting the pipes and assembling the parts. Take a look at the PVC fittings section at a hardware store and it will make more sense. (You can scroll down to the PVC fittings section of this article to see a picture of what the aisle usually looks like in a large store: http://steampunk.wonderhowto.com/inspiration/28-most-popular-steampunk-materials-your-local-hardware-store-0141461/.) Employees at major hardware stores can cut the pipes for you if needed as well. The dimensions that you need will vary based on the saddle that you have (and also the space available in your car hatch area, if that is an issue). If you have multiple saddles, measure your biggest/longest one. Thanks for bringing up that point; we edited the project description to include the step of measuring your saddle. Let us know if you have any more questions!
